Benefits of learning Kung Fu

There are many reasons to train kung fu beyond trying to be like famous films stars like Jackie Chan or Bruce Lee.
Training kung fu brings numerous benefits to both your body and your mind

Self Defence

Kung fu is one of the worlds oldest fighting arts. Through its practice you will develop the strength, coordination, mental fortitude and skills to defend yourself.

A Great Workout

Ask any of our students and they will tell you that training kung fu with us will get you fit. If you are looking to lose a few kilograms, improve your balance or develop your flexibility our training will certainly support you with that.

Improves Self-Confidence and Self-Discipline

Those who dedicate themselves to a regular training regime of Kung Fu often say they see discipline and self-confidence in other parts of their life improve. You can use the things you learn in your martial arts training in other parts of your life.

Relieves Stress

Kung Fu is a great way of getting rid of stress and helping to clear the mind. This comes partly from the release of endorphins your get from exercise, partly from the fact the kung fu requires you to focus on the here and now and partly because when you train at East Midlands Kung Fu you become part of a community of people all looking to support and encourage each other.

Kung Fu Helps You Find Your Inner Self

Sometimes someone saying that you need to find your inner self can be a bit of a cliché, but when it comes to Kung Fu it is certainly true.

As you start to learn more about Kung Fu it becomes evident that it is much more than just punching and kicking things, as the principles and applications you learn help you to study yourself.

This understanding becomes part of who you are and people that try the discipline soon realise that they are now part of a tradition that has been passed through generations.

MEET THE TEAM

Mike MOLLOY

Chief Instructor: Lead instructor for traditional kung fu

Mike originally trained in Judo as a child moving over to Lau Gar Kung Fu in 1999 after being inspired by the film, The Matrix. He has since gone on to achieve his second degree black sash. He has a particular passion for kung fu weaponry and unlocking applications of the kung fu forms.

Mike spent two decades working as a primary school teacher. This gives him an excellent understanding of how his students learn, how to adapt lessons to suit the needs of his students and how to ensure his students develop a deep understanding of the art.

Simon Fenwick

Lead instructor for kickboxing

Simon has trained in various martial arts for the past 40 years, obtaining numerous senior grades including his black belt in kickboxing and second degree black belt in Lau Gar kung fu.

As well as being a qualified martial arts coach, Simon has been heavy involved in the scouting movement for many years and through this has gained experience working with children and young people.

Simon is ready to use his years of experience in competition and kickboxing training to help our students reach their training goals.

sarah robson

Instructor for kickboxing

Sarah began training in martial arts in her mid-twenties and quickly found a passion that stuck. She earned her black belt in Taekwondo and has spent over 15 years teaching children aged 4–12, building confidence, discipline and strong foundations through engaging classes.

She later qualified in Purestretch (2023) and as a Level 3 Personal Trainer (2024), and now runs PT and mobility sessions in Market Harborough.

A long-time fan of martial arts cinema, her favourite film is Blade. When it comes to technique, she has a particular appreciation for elbows and knees — perhaps because they are not always competition-friendly, which makes understanding and refining them all the more satisfying.
